i am using an Ioblix with an ISDN line.. i'm getting speeds in excess of
8000cps on a 6400cps line..
i'm using the same processor.. i don't seem to be experience any
difficulties at all..
i found Genesis very easy to set up.. just select the relevant drvier from
the the DEVS: drawer and give it a GENERIC command set.. if your using ISDN
too, it may help to modify the INIT line with ATB4<CR>

Oh God! :) It gets worse, these awful typos of mine, it was meant to
be PAINT package! :)) Hey Matt (Neko), it was bad enough when I
confused my hands with another part of my anatomy (as a result of a
horrendous typo...).
Dammit.. :)

It's not easy when you're 16 programming a Word Processor, Database,
Spreadsheet, Organiser and Page Layout program with all the other stuff
on your own! Hee Hee! :) (I have enough faith the Amiga will still be
here in 2072 when PS2k will be ready! :) Nah, this year!). Sorry Matt
about the graphics, a virus wreaked havoc this weekend on my machine;
and almost destroyed all of my PS2k backups. However; I will send you
a list of what's needed and the dimensions. I'm sorry about that, I
will endeavour to do that tonight! :)

Nah, I wanna make a go of this Elate stuff, sounds really cool.... :)

I'm sure that using Blitz can't be helping much, either. And age is
no measure of ability: which must mean you're either lazy or crap ;)

Probably not in the long run, I wasn't really making a statement about
ability, just that I also have a lot on in life which also consumes a
great deal of time.
But I wish to move from Blitz, simply because it's proprietary, and C
isn't. C does have lots of advatages as well...

Owwww.. :)
> Okay, then, how is it going to be cool?
I'm not saying QNX isn't because it evidently offers many features
which do make it groundbreaking. However I have a 'feeling' about
Elate which is hard to describe; but I feel it offers what is needed in
a truly revolutionay Kernel, OS whatever (IMO). QNX offers some of
this Tao's stuff offers all of it. It's hard to describe a feeling
like this, but I'm ready to follow where Amiga wants to go, luckily it
seems to be in the path or idea where i also want to go. I was
somewhat dissappointed when Amiga last year chose Linux over QNX,
screamed bandwagon! :)
The Real Time features of QNX and Elate offer the potential to create
applications that are so fluid, and fast that the user is unaware of
delays, and processing times. The Web could move from being a slow,
lethargic experience (for the majority), to a true show case of
multimedia and interaction.
QNX offers this, but IMO Elate offers more...
All the best,
Nick.

I'm not saying it is, either. I'm asking what is so cool about Elate,
not which one you prefer. Why must everything be a competition
for you people?
> However I have a 'feeling' about Elate which is hard to describe; but

Bzzt! It doesn't need to be revolutionary to be "cool", or innovative.
In fact, if anyone cites something as good because it has the ability
to be revolutionary should be shot..
> OS whatever (IMO). QNX offers some of
> this Tao's stuff offers all of it.
Tao offers nothing that couldn't be offered by QNX Neutrino, and
certainly Tao themselves offer nothing NOW that isn't offered by
Neutrino.
I think you're getting a bit mixed up: Amiga are the ones touting
coolness, and although Tao are the facilitators of cool, they
haven't done anything so "groundbreaking" yet, and that includes
the rather-lame Searching For Tao video: nothing I haven't seen
before a million times on a million OSes on a million standard
graphics cards.

If you think that is what Real Time means then you're wrong.

Or a true showcase of how slow the internet really is? From being
something people blame on connections to something that is
being realised as just plain crap technology?
> QNX offers this, but IMO Elate offers more...
Like WHAT? A FEELING?
All aboard for the "Amiga Religion Supporting Elate" movement ;)

Hmmm... Are there any men in white coats after you, offering a nice soft
room in a big white house? Both systems are either incomplete or in their
infancies, and no real conclusions can really be drawn about either of them
until they're seen working "in the wild". Of course you'll only ever see the
best parts of the system... the Exciting stuff... They're trying to sell it
to you. That's their job! Each and every system has it's own advantages and
disadvantages. It's a matter of Weighing up all these advantages and
disadvantages...
To sum this up?
Wait and see...
Of Course, this is all IMH(umble)O

Bzzzztt! The technology used in Neutrino has been around for
ages, and has been proven in many areas. Neutrino 2 just got
released (just the kernel), so that's being proven NOW.

Yes! And don't jump at every Elate or Neutrino feature like
it's the best thing since sliced bread, or revolutionary,
because everything has at some time been done before
(in Neutrino's case it's because QNX do that kind of thing
a lot, in Elate's case it's because all the technology they stand
to use is going to be highly-available public technology
like Bluetooth and HAVi)

But those "Many Areas" are BIG corporations (NASA etc.), AFAIK it hasn't
really been tested in the "Home" Environment as of yet...

The problem is remaining compatible whilst providing "Revolutionary"
features. Often the two don't work hand-in-hand.

There are a few webpad type thingies that run Neutrino.. that's
homey enough for me. If you mean as a desktop machine: the
desktop machine (although not the Desktop Metaphor) is
being phased out.
Go and search for the "Ottoman" PC - it's like a footstool with

Remaining compatible with what? Windows? The Amiga? Your
PC hardware?
And it doesn't NEED to be revolutionary to be good. Collas is gone
now, you don't NEED to keep saying that dumb, pointless, MEANINGLESS
word.

Hi Nick,
Whats this PS2k your all mentioning???
Some sort of developer tool it sounds like, or is it a set of
mini-programs that can be incorporated into a larger program to do
certain things. (Plug-ins in other words)

Needless bashing is fun, just like mindless violence and Carmageddon and
making music with no key or structure (or anything else which works).
I don't do it very often.
I'm not naive - I'm just tired of tring to make sense of it all, tired
of striving to be right all the time and I'm an idealist.
My view of the world is from a realistic perspective. I just never say
anything about it.
I'm not big, tough or sexy. I have never thought that I am. I'm also

I agree. I do. This is all cos of one 'off the cuff' comment, which was
not a serious remark. Unfortunately the limits of email distorted its

I would say I was actually near the middle-top area. No, really. But my
experience with microsoft stuff stinks, and I live in an environment
where I get heckled simply for not going around saying "Bill gates is
god, I love him and Microsoft only want me to have the most wonderful
time of my life. Hurrar!" So I compensate. I don't mean it, and when I
argue in earnest I use proper justifiable arguments (unlike others
around here who say "everyone uses windows 95 so it must be good" and
when I argue against that they (effectively) say "I'm right and you're
wrong, so there". Can you see my situation? Its made me bitter and
there's nothing I can do.

Thats what the docs say. According to them (and dont' get me wrong - I
don't think theyre gospel, and I'm not saying they're right) you get
about 10kBps faster rates. Something to do with using all 8 lines
instead of just 4, as in the LapLink cable.
I've never tried it, so I can't really comment.

99% of the home computing market is running using Proprietary systems
(PCI/AGP/ISA Etc.). If a system come out that doesn't use one of these
systems, it falls over (Amiga (Zorro), Archimedes (Acorn SlotII)). The "Next
Big Thing" is going to have to be compatible with the last "Big Thing".
Systems that aren't, Die. AMD's Athlon's only selling because Intel Goofed
and withdrew SlotI Pentium III's, the Celeron was only held afloat by it's
Cheapness, the new "Flip-Chips" are not moving, and Intel's having to Bundle
them all with slockets... All cases of Compatibility forcing something to
conform, But before someone says it, Standards DO change. How many PCI
Graphics cards are there now? How many *New* ISA Soundcards?

Yep, the best way to change standards like card slots is to tack the old
ones on to a mid-way machine/program until all the old technology is
replaced with new compatible technology. Then you dump the old tech in
the next lot of machines/programs.
A bit like starship upgrading in Stars!. Well... actually its not, but
its the thought that counts.

And it wasn't even unique to Amiga either. I mean, Amstrad's, Speccy's,
Commodore 64's and too many more to mention were all arranged this way (even

Ummm, no. They still use the same tape, just different cameras which work
differently. Tansferring celluloid to magnetic tape just has the movie feel
to it, but 25fps and 50fps both use the same amount of tape

What?! Do you mean in the file requester? Then no, it doesn't, but then the
standard Mac file requester doesn't rely on icons.
All the best,

There was a Tintin game? What type of game was it? Hopefully it wasn't
a platformer in the style of Batman :-)

Ben, Was it really necessary to quote his entire message to give this one

There is in Office 98 and all the Microsoft stuff. I'm sure it's in
AppleWorks (formerly ClarisWorks). Then again, it's *representing*
an action, not dictating one.
It's a DISK, not just a floppy disk. Could be a Zip disk. Could be
an LS120 disk. Could be anything.
And hovering over the icon shows it's true nature: SAVE.
Someone needs to look up the word "icon" and the word "metaphor"

Neither 320x512 or 640x256 are listed in the table. Neither is 640x512.

OK, stupid question time.....
Can I set up my Amiga (via NetConnect) to access this? Or does it need
special software that only runs from a PC?

As expandable as any old PC - the lid of the "footstool" flips up
to reveal a kinky LCD monitor, and the keyboard is embedded
in the stool like a normal laptop one. Obviously the "stool"
houses all the components, so they'll prolly be low-powered
laptop ones which are expensive, but just as upgradable as
any standard PC..

Right, an average home system is going to flop unless it has PCI
and/or AGP on it. We can agree on that. But what makes you think
either Amiga or QSSL are planning on targetting those markets in
a big way?
Surely the world is shifting into PDA's now? And laptops and Palmtops?
LCD screens and pen-devices?
As long as your device is well equipped from the start, you can do
anything with it for a long long time. I can't see the original Palm Pilots
being too obselete now that a colour one is out, they all still work just
as well in b&w.
Now add a USB port to one and you have an uber-PDA. Standards
compliant, can we go home now?
With laptops, you hard-wire the graphics and sound into it, as long
as it's sufficiently low-power (Crusoe?) and sufficiently high-output
(the newer generation of gfx chips) then it'll last practically forever,
you aren't going to need cutting edge anything for something which
is based on portability.
PCI? AGP? What makes you think they WON'T support them? But also
what makes you think they'll NEED to?

No, if you read back you'll find that Commodore went tits up, which
got us "into this mess". If the Amiga had been left to advance, it'd be
just like the Macintosh is now.. or the PC.. or both?

Would it? Yes, I admit Commodore went (To borrow your metaphor) "Tits =
Up",
but the problem with integrated Hardware is that it becomes Obsolete =
very
quickly, and is VERY difficult to change. Look at PC Laptops. They have =
a
Life Expectancy of 4 Months (From the mouth of both a Toshiba and an HP
Rep)!
Do we really want to fall into that trap?

Oohh,
I may just consider de-subbing from Wirenet to join up for this (and I
can still use Cable & Wireless cheaper calls during the day).
I mean - =A314 a month for a very good service and 20Mb space but no real
free time
Or =A310 a month for a service i aint sure about, unkown webspace but
free calls evenings and weekends??
So, what i now need to know is whats the service like? (connection wise

Do your research: Dave Haynie was all for a move to PCI instead of
Zorro, and moving the display off the motherboard. OS3.1 was the
first step to get rid of the AGA chipset by building in features for
RTG cards... and then they went (to borrow my metaphor back)
tits up.
> Look at PC Laptops. They have a Life Expectancy of 4 Months

Yep, SALES REPS. A shelf-life of 4 months. Take home that
Toshiba Satellite Laptop (with it's PII 300 processor) and it'll
last you 3 years and only just be a low-end system. It's not
like you'll wanna run Quake 6 on it..
> Do we really want to fall into that trap?
What trap? Of being guided by sales and marketing chaps? We
already did.. but thankfully neither Fleecy, Bill, Francis C., Chris
Hinsley? or Dan Dodge are driven by sales either..

Hi. It's Nick again. I have found that using version 37.14 of the
Ioblix software made actually made my machine go slower! When I
reverted
back to version 37.12 my speeds went back up to 2000+. Why?
P.S. Has anyone noticed that TweekWB has a problem with Fblit (v3.51)?
Version 2.51 seems to be O.K though.
CtrlWB is less memory hogging on startup but uses more ChipRam
when you open windows.

Sales were NOT "slow". They went down because they cocked up the
PC division which sucked up all the money.

I'm a Phoenix member, he's a Phoenix member. Discussed

Archives (look on Amiga.org for the link) and we've been over

Ha! You've got something to learn if you think either Fleecy or
Bill will be making any kind of significant money out of Amiga
for at least a year or two.
Amiga, QSSL and Tao are all technology-driven companies,
they thrive by making the best technology available rather
than competing with thousands of others by undercutting
prices and launching huge marketing campaigns.
Hence, they are not driven by sales. HP and Toshiba ARE.

If you only have FBlit 3.51 you need to set the LoadWB command to
use SIMPLEGELS otherwise **FBlit** sucks up memory, not WBCtrl.
To fix it properly?
Right, go to http://www.tpec.u-net.com and get FBlit 3.56e because
you'll need it for this. Note down your FBlit settings, and delete the
ENVARC:FBlit.cfg file before installing it. Get the newest WBCtrl as
well.
Now, when you start using the new FBlit, load up the GUI (type FBlit
again) and check that the QBSBlitPatch is enabled, and that the AddBob
and RemBob patches are disabled. Add your tasks to the lists again,
including IPrefs (get the double thingies right ;)
Now put WBCtrl just before the LoadWB line (which can now just
use standard arguments, i.e. get rid of SIMPLEGELS), and set it to
look like this:
:
WBCtrl IMT=ICONFAST
LoadWB ..
:
et voila! If you're having lots of trouble, just give me a poke and I'll
see if I can help. For I am the FBlit Master!!!

I admit HP and Toshiba are DIRECTLY driven by Profit, QSSL and TAO Are

It's not high. Hang on - the screenshots on palmgear are at 160x160. The
newer Palms (the V, Vx, VII) have the same screen but better backlighting.
> And what's the colour one at?
I think it's the same, but it's likely to be higher. However, the overall
result is apparently lower (because it would have to be at least three
times higher to have the same apparent res as the mono version).

I think you have to have a file in your ENVARC:ppc drawer called
"nopatch" with the number 1
in it. So to do this just make a drawer called "powerpc" you "should"
have it.
and make a file, using ed, with the number 1 in it, call it "nopatch"
and you should be ok when you next boot.

There are plenty of reasons to criticise every software house; every program
ever written (with the obvious exception of "Hello World" and the like) has
bugs and flaws and MS's software is particularly easy to criticise (apart
from Win2000 :)...mainly because the flaws are in a piece of sofware that's
used by a billion (random large number) people. If the Amiga had been half
as successful, there'd be a much larger proportion of it's users criticising
it - as it stands, the users who are left are the ones who use it by choice,
so naturally there's fewer criticisms of it.

None taken - I knew you weren't talking about me from the "big, tough and

Whether it's constructive or derogatory (and by that I'm assuming you're
talking about constructive criticism as opposed to criticising merely
because you can), it shouldn't be on here unless it's related to the Amiga.

Does anyone know if the cable supplied with NetworkPC can be used in the

I used Timedemo demo2 for the tests. I already stated the spec in a
previous mail, but its below anyway.
A1200T with CyberStormPPC 604e/200 and 060/50 with 96MB using a CVPPC
running CGX V4.2pre3. PowerUP progs run under PowerUp kernal (latest
flash update and libs - v46.28 IIRC), and WarpUp progs run under
WarpOS v3 (the latest available from H+P anyway - warp.library v4,
powerpc.library v15.0)

I knew about that Problem :) and forgot about it, and I think that's the
case for most PFS users. Of course they do not all post "Hey PFS2 works
on my system!", so you might get the impression everyone talking about
PFS has had bad experiences with it.

OK, I know that small buffers can ruin your HD Block ID (whatever that
is), but PFS3 now checks it and throws up a warning (this should really
have been a part of PFS2)

I guess you have been lucky then, but a crash during a write access
under FFS can seriously screw your data, so bad that even DiskValidator
won't help anymore, and DiskSalv is not an option for some of my
partitions (>4GB)

I would be very interested what advantages you would get from PFS apart
from security? Sure, there is the speed increase, but the only fields
where it is really noticable is directory access (YAM) and seeking (e.g.
playing an AVI/QT movie)

Well, for example early versions of V3 (EARLY versions, I want to make
that clear!), Photogenics4, beta versions of PhotoFolio2, ramlib
problems (stupid, I know, but solved)...
But I've never had PFS2 crash my machine.

If you just wanna copy a few files across (or in my case a whole CD) then
its great. Of course you wouldn't set up a network with it, but its not

Oooooooohhhhhh.......
Just a small point though, its their fault it didn't sell very well:
1) DPaint still had some features miles ahead of it, and that is years old
2) I seem to have several free versions on my HD anyway
3) Everyone already has DPaint which does virtually the same thing just
aswell anyway
4) No 24-bit
Basically, it never offered anything marginally better than that which was
given away with amigas anyway, you can heardly blame anyone for not buying
it.

Unfortunately, it still ain't working properly. It connects & works to start

Let me guess...you got the Punchinello + Wheel Mouse deal?

If you got the bundled Punchinello + mouse deal then I can. Very simple,
the lead on the mouse isn't of the greatest quality...and with the length
of the adaptor and everything, does it push up against a wall or something?
If it does, try pulling your miggy out form the wall a bit. When the
lead/PS2 connector on mine gets pushed right up against the wall (and now
I'm guessing) some of the wires seem to get crossed and it does bizaire and
wonderful things with the mouse pointer.--

Take it back and swap it then ;-)
Seriously, the ones they sell (25 pin RGB + audio -> scart) should work in
an A4000. I should know, I've got an A4000! :)
Are you sure it's not a problem with your TV?

You can use NetConnect, no problem. The problem is signing up - I've
tried using IB 2.1, Voyager3, AWeb 3.3SE and IB2.2beta, both with and
without Javascript enabled. All produced differing results, but to cut
a long story short, neither worked :( Yes, BT's HTML/JS still sucks!

I don't fancy returning to Enterprise - they were my first ISP, and
I left them for Freeserve, after loads of problems. Funny thing is
that I still have access to my webspace there, even though I closed
my account over a year ago :) I've been very impressed with
Freeserve - IMHO, they're service is much better (less problems).
Having said that, I've been having connectivity problems with Freeserve
(line drops, etc) over the last few weeks, so I've got nothing to lose
with going back to BT (Enterprise use the same BTNet backbone), just to
see if they've improved at all :)

I have had so many arguments with that man in the past that I have lost count.

If you're thinking of "Tintin on the Moon" by Infogrames then I'm proud to
announce that it's in my collection of old, barely-played games. :)
It's a platform level followed by a steer-the-ship-to-avoid-the-asteroids
level (and so on, about eight times each) until you reach the moon. The
graphics weren't bad, but that's about it. Hmm... never did reach the moon.

If you mean a WAD editor then yes, there is a version of DEU (Doom Editing
Utilities) for the Amiga. A search of Aminet or AFCDs will produce it.
Failing that, if you can run Shapeshifter or Fusion, there's a Mac version
of DEU or, better yet, Hellmaker (I've long since lost the URLs so you'll
need to search the web).
Hope that helps,
Jonny.

Hi
I aquired a modem for my Psion series 5 and was struggling to set it
up.
The manual was as useful as an ashtray on a motorbike, so I sent Psion
an email that was, in hindsight, a little curt (Heck, it could have
been written by Neil Bothwick himself ;)
In the meantime I sorted it out, but the guys at Psion were more than
a match for me. I've just had to download a 2mb PDF file, over my
standard A1200 serial port :(
Bah.
